Talking to a co-worker. This week is a public school Easter break. He had to take his elementary-school-age kids to his Connecticut in-laws for a week.

How, I wonder, does every other family handle this situation – where both parents have to work, and there is no in-law option. Who looks after the small schoolchildren then?

His answer is – daycamp (which costs some obscene amount of money in this city – certainly more than a median salary in this city would cover).

I didn’t ask him how the parents of lesser means, or single parents handle this situation.

Why, and how, does anyone in this country have children?
