People are violent because their morality demands it – Tage Rai – Aeon

this was in my inbox this morning, in unplanned coincidence with the horror that happened in North Carolina just a few hours before.

It’s too easy to explain away the hateful actions of terrorists like Dylann Storm Roof, and many others before him, as some kind of innately inhuman behavior (and I still want to think of terrorism as just another variation of hate-crime). That kind of explaining is simplistic, and so far failed to offer any solutions for dealing with it.

I don’t know if the author of this article is right. Acknowledging that our human sense of morality, however twisted it might be, causes people commit heinous acts like what he did is difficult. But I like Aeon because it at least tries to ask uncomfortable questions like that. And I do agree with its conclusions.

(if my followers want to talk about it, I’d be curious to know what they think)
