thought I’d put it here. This was the most upvoted answer.

I am thinking of how much this would apply to Brooklyn. It probably does (except the weather), to where I live now. But the new place will be more relevant. The new place, however, can hardly be defined as a “place where people have a lot of money”, so looking at this question is largely moot. Anyway, I will probably get back to this a few months from now.

Is Silicon Valley a good place to raise children? Why?

Yes, I think so.

  • Among places where people have a lot of money, Silicon Valley has the best social and family values. People are generous, down-to-earth, and non-materialistic. There is relatively little flash.
  • People care less about personal appearance in Silicon Valley than in any other place I know where there is a lot of wealth. There is no plastic surgery and relatively little emphasis on fashion, makeup, etc. This is great for raising kids, because all that focus on personal appearance is socially and psychologically unhealthy.
  • There is a pretty big focus on being healthy – eating well and getting exercise. So that’s good.
  • Social and economic hierarchy is much less important in Silicon Valley than in any other place I’ve lived in. People don’t care so much where you are from, what you do, what your family does. Parents want their kids to hang out with a wide variety of people. Diversity is perceived as hugely important. There is virtually no old-establishment social life that excludes newcomers.
  • People are very tolerant here. Being different is a good thing. It’s a great place to be a LBGTQ child or parent.
  • Popularity isn’t as important here as it is elsewhere. Being smart and interested in creative stuff is cool. Being a nerd is OK.
  • The weather and outdoor life are awesome. It’s warm and sunny most of the year. Never uncomfortable – not super-cold in winter or humid in summer. Skiing 4 hours away; the beach 30-60 minutes away.
