I have better things to do than watch republican debates, but reading about them on the next day is making me queasy with powerlessness, since it is much more likely than not that one of these dangerous goons will be the president, and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
The reason is – Hillary definitely gets the nomination (and as much as I like Bernie, a few nitpicks notwithstanding, she would be a great president), but
A) her nomination will energize the republicans to turn out and vote against her
B) their strategy to make people dislike her is working, and I already have seen the foolish attitude of some young(er) people who haven’t lived through Bush, who say that they hate her too and will write Sanders in if he is not nominated, effectively handing their vote to the republicans. Or just be too lazy to come out and vote, which is entirely plausible.
C) since Isis would love to see a republican win, it is highly likely that they’d try to do something horrible right before the election next year.
So, everything really gets decided in the republican primaries, by the republicans (who already control the congress, senate, the Supreme Court and the great majority of state governments).
I suppose I could register as a republican and vote in their primaries, but there isn’t a single person in their list who makes me even remotely comfortable.
I guess this is kind of how the rest of the world gets to watch the U.S. elections in horror, feeling full effects of its results, but without being able to participate.
