I think if I were black or had a black son, I would look for any way to move to a country that doesn’t have the same culture of violence.

If my parents gave up their careers/friends/social status for me, it would only be fair that I’d do the same.

thing I learned today from the air-conditioner repair people:

When they came and fixed the air-conditioner back in June, they charged me $120 for the refrigerant which I thought was crazy.

Looking up R.22 refrigerant cost, I’m learning that it’s another name for bloody Freon, and this several-year-old air-conditioner still uses it! Not only that, they still make and sell it in this country – although it is now expensive because it is finally supposed to be phased out in 2020.

And I thought they dealt with this ozone-hole issue back in the 90s!

This also means – several thousand for a new air-conditioner for this apartment, some time in the next 4 years..

This building, initially “affordable housing” in the 90s, was built with zero insulation, I learned from neighbors. No insulation between the roof and the apartment means that when it’s 106F degrees outside, the A/C has to run all day and still struggle, resulting in $200 electricity bills and the constant hum and vibration.

Insulation can be added, but will cost several thousand, when split between all roof-adjacent apartments – and the building will not pick it up. The math, as it is, is that doing it is worthwhile if we stay here for 10 years or more. But it looks increasingly likely that we won’t. In the meantime, I will pretend that I live on a space station – I heard they are not quiet places

Headhunter called and told me how interview at that natural-speech company didn’t go so well. They thought it was a “cultural fit”, but, as usual, technical skills weren’t up to what they needed. I know – and it’s the kind of technical skills that they need that you can only get on the job of course – and my company using everything so old won’t help anything. They did think I could be a project manager, but that is the last thing I want to do – even if they had an opening.
