Things are not really so terrible because people are finally running for office – and they are just absolutely inspiring. If we manage to not let Trump kill us all in the next few months or couple of years, things really will be looking up

And yeah, in France they now have a law that allows fines on harrassers on the spot.

Can Our Democracy Survive Tribalism?

One of the great attractions of tribalism is that you don’t actually have to think very much. All you need to know on any given subject is which side you’re on. You pick up signals from everyone around you, you slowly winnow your acquaintances to those who will reinforce your worldview, a tribal leader calls the shots, and everything slips into place. After a while, your immersion in tribal loyalty makes the activities of another tribe not just alien but close to incomprehensible.

This is an important read, and important questions to ask ourselves.

What happened in Turkey is absolutely heartbreaking.
What’s even worse, and speaks to the credit of the Turks is that he didn’t even win despite the already uneven playing field, and just changed the rules at the last moment when he saw he might be losing.

Everyone at the Coop last night was freaking out about the likelihood of Trump being elected. One of them, who is on Green Party message boards, saw how people no longer even talk about Bernie anymore, but how they seriously are considering voting for the Green Party candidate, which would guarantee Trump victory.

Just enough to fuel my own trump freakout.

Also, Nader-regret recollections, and Brexit comparisons.

What’s interesting is how little consideration is given to Russia’s input in all of this and how Trump election would be a perfect scenario for them in weakening the US and making the world more dangerous place. I actually wonder where Green Party contributions are coming from now. Especially considering how he might pick Flynn for VP.

The dark thoughts that come in the meantime are:

  • this latest Hillary scandal is a pretty serious one
  • they won’t relent and more sh.t will come out
  • this makes her barely-electable if at all
  • Democrats have no one else
  • one of the freak-show that is the Republican nominee roster will inevitably get elected in 2016
  • Republicans will remain in control of both Senate and Congress for the foreseeable future because no one bothers to vote in the midterms
  • the Supreme Court is conservative-dominated
  • we are screwed (but the housing will get cheaper!)

Maybe I should quit looking for another job and beg my crap-o employer to move me to Toronto before moving to Canada becomes “the thing”.

Although – New York and New England will remain Democratic and progressive. So, things won’t be so bad at least around here.

A Texas Law Would Let Teachers Shoot Students Who “Threaten” School Property. Guess Which Students Would Suffer Most?

The bill, nicknamed the “Teacher’s Protection Act”, would create “a defense to prosecution for and civil liability of an educator who uses force or deadly force to protect the educator’s person, students of the school, or property of the school, and suspension of a student who assaults an employee of a school.”

While everyone is out loudly protesting police brutality, others quietly vote to elect people who propose this kind of legislation that would allow teachers to shoot any student they consider threatening.. And, as we all know, as Texas goes, so eventually does the rest of the country
